Hello! We are I'RAISE, a non-profit organization in New York City. We focus on mental health advocacy/services + program, and academic enrichment program at underserved NYC schools!


Our Empire Afterschool Program is currently looking for fantastic volunteers to join our Afterschool program in Brooklyn, New York, for 4 hours per week. An an Instructor Volunteer, you will work with our children (pre-k to 5th grade), and helping to build a positive and inclusive fun learning environment.

Dance Instructor Volunteer Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Dance Classes: Plan and lead dance classes for students of varying ages and skill levels, focusing on a variety of dance styles such as ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, or cultural dances.

  2. Teach Fundamental Techniques: Instruct students on fundamental dance techniques, including posture, alignment, footwork, coordination, rhythm, and expression, using age-appropriate teaching methods and exercises.

  3. Choreograph Dance Routines: Choreograph dance routines, combinations, and sequences for students to learn and perform, incorporating elements of creativity, storytelling, and musicality.

  4. Provide Individualized Instruction: Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to students who may need extra assistance or want to focus on specific areas of dance technique or performance.

  5. Promote Creative Expression: Encourage creative expression and self-confidence through dance, allowing students to explore movement, improvisation, and personal style in a supportive and inclusive environment.

  6. Prepare for Performances: Assist students in preparing for dance performances, showcases, recitals, or competitions, guiding them through rehearsals, costume fittings, and stage presentations.

  7. Offer Positive Feedback: Offer positive feedback, encouragement, and constructive criticism to students during dance classes and rehearsals, helping them to improve their skills and grow as dancers.

  8. Demonstrate Dance Etiquette: Model dance etiquette, professionalism, and respect for fellow dancers, instructors, and the art form, instilling values of discipline, dedication, and teamwork in young performers.

  9. Ensure Safety: Ensure the safety and well-being of students during dance activities by providing proper instruction, supervision, and guidance, and addressing any safety concerns or risks.


Dance Instructor Volunteer Qualifications:

  1. A passion for dance and a desire to share your expertise with young dancers.

  2. Proficiency in dance techniques, styles, and choreography, with teaching or performing experience preferred.

  3. Previous experience teaching, coaching, or working with youth, especially in a dance or performing arts setting, is preferred but not required.

  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.

  5. Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting the artistic, physical, and emotional development of youth.

  6. Must complete DOE School Fingerprint ($105)

  7. Must complete OCFS Fingerprint + Medical Clearance ($70+). Clearance timeline takes up to 3 weeks or more. Costs are not covered by our organization.
