Hello! We are I'RAISE, a non-profit organization in New York City. We focus on mental health advocacy/services + program, and academic enrichment program at underserved NYC schools!


Our Empire Afterschool Program is currently looking for fantastic volunteers to join our Afterschool program in Brooklyn, New York, for 4 hours per week. An an Instructor Volunteer, you will work with our children (pre-k to 5th grade), and helping to build a positive and inclusive fun learning environment.

Basketball Instructor Volunteer Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Basketball Sessions: Plan and lead basketball sessions, drills, and games for students of varying skill levels, focusing on skill development, technique, strategy, and sportsmanship.

  2. Teach Fundamental Skills: Instruct students on fundamental basketball skills, including dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense, and teamwork, using age-appropriate teaching methods and drills.

  3. Organize Skill Challenges: Organize skill challenges, competitions, and mini-games to help students improve their basketball abilities, boost confidence, and foster healthy competition.

  4. Promote Physical Fitness: Encourage physical fitness and active lifestyles by incorporating conditioning exercises, warm-ups, and cool-downs into basketball sessions, emphasizing the importance of fitness and wellness.

  5. Provide Positive Reinforcement: Offer positive reinforcement, feedback, and encouragement to students during basketball activities, recognizing their efforts, achievements, and improvements.

  6. Demonstrate Sportsmanship: Model good sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials, instilling values of integrity, discipline, and teamwork in young athletes.

  7. Ensure Safety: Ensure the safety and well-being of students during basketball activities by enforcing rules, supervising play, and addressing any safety concerns or hazards.

  8. Collaborate with Program Staff: Work collaboratively with program staff, including coordinators, assistants, and volunteers, to support the overall goals and objectives of the afterschool program.

  9. Serve as a Positive Role Model: Serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating leadership, enthusiasm for basketball, and a commitment to sportsmanship and personal growth.


Basketball Instructor Volunteer Qualifications:

  1. A passion for basketball and a desire to share your expertise with young athletes.

  2. Proficiency in basketball skills, techniques, and strategies, with coaching or playing experience preferred.

  3. Previous experience coaching, instructing, or working with youth, especially in a sports or recreational setting, is preferred but not required.

  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.

  5. Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting the physical, social, and emotional development of youth.

  6. Must complete DOE School Fingerprint ($105)

  7. Must complete OCFS Fingerprint + Medical Clearance ($70+). Clearance timeline takes up to 3 weeks or more. Costs are not covered by our organization.
